Resident Evil Requiem (2026): Why an SSD is Mandatory and How Much Space You Need

A new era of survival horror is upon us. Resident Evil Requiem brings revolutionary graphics and zero loading times, but with one uncompromising condition: Forget about traditional hard drives.

In short: Resident Evil Requiem requires approximately 73.33 GB of space on PC, and the minimum requirements are clear: An SSD is mandatory. Playing on an old HDD will lead to brutal stuttering and texture failure.

Capcom released its most ambitious title to date in February 2026. Resident Evil Requiem uses an upgraded RE Engine designed to stream data in real-time. This technology is precisely why loading screens have become a thing of the past, but also the reason why your old HDD simply can't keep up anymore.

How much space does the game actually take?

Official Steam requirements list 73.33 GB, but the reality after installation and initial patches may vary slightly by platform:

  • PC (Steam): 73.33 GB
  • PlayStation 5: ~ 72.88 GB
  • Xbox Series X/S: 75 - 80 GB

We recommend having at least 85–90 GB available to prevent SSD slowdown caused by filling the drive to near capacity, which we discussed in this article.

Why HDD fails for Resident Evil Requiem

Unlike previous entries in the series, Requiem doesn't load the entire level at once upon startup. Instead, it constantly "pulls" data from the disk based on where you look in the environment. A traditional mechanical hard drive (HDD) with its 100-150 MB/s speeds simply isn't responsive enough.

If you attempt to run the game from an HDD, expect:

  • Severe FPS drops when moving between rooms.
  • Late-loading objects (pop-in) and blurry low-res textures.
  • Stuttering audio during cinematic cut-scenes.

Need an upgrade?

If you're still running on an HDD, Resident Evil Requiem is a clear signal that 2026 is the year for a definitive switch to SSD. Even a budget NVMe drive will take your experience to another galaxy.
